Suddenly, I was thrown a curveball and had to adjust to something I never expected. Little did I know how much my life would change or the valuable lesson I would learn along the way.
When I was pregnant with my second son, Victor Jr., my body began to fight itself. For months I felt terrible and doctors ran all kinds of tests, trying to determine what was causing my organs to malfunction. Eventually they found out that it was systemic lupus erythematosus. I was 41 years old and had thought that my biggest concern would be sleepless nights with my soon-to-be newborn son, this chronic condition was the last thing I expected.
I have always been a positive person, never spending long on the downside of things. But it was not always easy and after the initial devastation of the diagnosis, the next couple of years were a battle. These new limitations were more than I had bargained for and sometimes I wanted to just scream. My doctor tried so many different medications and while I still held out hope we would find the one, that hope faded a little bit with each failed attempt. I was discouraged by the lack of progress and trying to find my new normal, adjusting to all the fatigue, intestinal distress, and chronic pain that had become part of my day-to-day.
There were days when I was totally exhausted and getting out of bed was a battle. The intestinal distress and pain became regular visitors and I started to forget what it felt like before, when I was “normal.” I started working from home to simplify things and made changes that helped me get through those tougher days, but I was so frustrated by my new normal. I was lucky to have the support I did from my family and that I was able to take those rests, even though I desperately wanted to return to the way things had been before.
Fortunately, after a couple years my doctor found the right medication for me. It was a perfect match and a few months after starting it, I finally felt some relief for the first time in years. I was amazed by the changes and there are not words to describe the relief knowing I finally had a working treatment. Since then, I have only continued to improve. It was not an overnight success, there were still flare-ups from time-to-time. I was no stranger to the emergency room and even developed a routine for those visits. Then in 2012 I went into remission and have stayed there ever since. Looking back, I see through all the pain, all the battles, I came out stronger the other side.
What I realized was that sometimes life needs adjustments. We spend so long getting set in our ways, developing our rhythms that it can be hard to adapt when life throws us a curveball. I never expected to have lupus or the limitations on my life that went along with it.
